Emily Cox

Choir Director (1994-May 2014)

EmilyEMILY COX's devotion to the development of outstanding choral art has earned her a reputation as one of Australia's leading choral conductors.

She delivers technically authoritative and interpretively compelling performances of a particularly broad repertoire from early music through to premières of newly-composed works.

Known for her ability to inspire singers of all ages and levels to explore and refine choral tone, and to achieve appropriateness of musical style, her work is grounded in the philosophy that the conductor is first and foremost an educator.

Emily is Music Director of Canticum Chamber Choir and the Brisbane Chorale, and part-time Lecturer in Choral Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University where she directs the Conservatorium Chamber Singers and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate conducting subjects. She is a regular guest lecturer and conductor for the Royal School of Church Music and the Australian National Choral Association. Emily has been Choir Director at St Mary's Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point since 1994.

Emily's ensembles have become the 'choirs of choice' of professional arts companies in Brisbane. Both Canticum and the Brisbane Chorale perform regularly with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. All of her choirs have a reputation for innovative programming and sensitive interpretations.  Since founding Canticum in 1995, the ensemble has become an acclaimed part of Brisbane's artistic scene via its annual concert series. From 1995-2006 the centerpiece of this series, the Good Friday Musical Meditation in St John's was regarded as a highlight of Brisbane Cultural calendar. Both Canticum and Brisbane Chorale can be heard in radio broadcasts, and via collaborations with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Ballet, Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra, and appearances in major music festivals. Canticum's debut on the international choral scene is marked by its invitation to be one of 22 guest choirs from around the world to perform at the 7th World Symposium on Choral Music in Kyoto, Japan in 2005.

Development of the young musician is of particular importance to Emily.  For three years she was Director of Choral Activities at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, and was Voice Instructor at Brisbane Boys College. She was Director of the Children's Course at the 1998 RSCM National Summer School in Newcastle, was Director of the 1997 National Youth Choir of Australia, and has directed two national Intervarsity Choral Festivals. As Artistic/Music Director of Anglicare's PromPraise, she has worked closely with numerous school and parish choirs throughout the Diocese. Having conducted orchestras and choirs around Australia, she is in demand interstate as an adjudicator and director of workshops and festivals for musicians of all ages.

Emily maintains close contact with the choral world in Europe and North America and has traveled overseas regularly to study with her mentor, Swedish choral conducting master Professor Eric Ericson.

Born in California, Emily received her undergraduate degree (four-year Bachelor of Arts) from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA (majoring in music, with minors in Literature, Art History and Romance Languages). Among the experiences which formed her early interest in sacred music, was her membership for many years in a thriving church music program in Los Angeles, California. She completed postgraduate studies in conducting at the Queensland Conservatorium in 1988.

EMILY COX is on leave from St Mary's from December 2012
