Director of Music - Phillip Gearing
PHILLIP GEARING has given organ recitals throughout Australia as well as in Britain and in Scandinavia where one of his recitals was broadcast on radio. Involved in church music since the age of 13, Phillip has been organist of St George-the-Martyr, Queens Square London (1985), Director of Music, St Luke's Toowoomba (2007-12) and, most recently, Acting Organist, St John's Cathedral Brisbane (2013-14).
He was a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Southern Queensland from 1992 to 2014. Phillip is also a director of the Organ Historical Trust of Australia, continuo player with the leading chamber orchestra Camerata of St John's, and performs regularly as a pianist in chamber music and Lieder.
In 2007 he released his CD Celebrate to mark the centenary of the organ at St Luke's Toowoomba - the only solo recording of a Queensland organ. He is currently recording a number of historic Queensland organs for release later in 2014. Phillip has composed a number of choral works; his most recent, Pro patria mori (a 25-minute setting of seven poems by World War I soldier poets for choir and piano), was recently premiered to great acclaim in Perth.
